Gentle Giant Moving Company Receives Innovation Partner of the Year Award from Boston Business Journal
Somerville, MA (PRWEB) September 16, 2008 -- Gentle Giant Moving Company, (http://www.gentlegiant.com) has received an award as Innovation Partner of the Year from the Boston Business Journal in recognition for its philanthropic partnership with Gentle Giant Rowing Club (GGRC). The moving company and the independently-operated rowing club were featured honorees at the third annual 2008 Corporate Philanthropy and Citizenship Summit on Friday, September 5.
The Partner of the Year awards recognize companies who have demonstrated innovation and development of best practices in specific partnerships with non-profits. Gentle Giant Moving Company's partnership with GGRC began in 2002 when the company donated the startup funding to launch the club that year; the club also adopted the company name as its own. Through the Gentle Giant Charitable Foundation, the company continues to provide nearly half the rowing club's funds each year for boats, equipment, coaching wages, program fees, and other materials. Larry O'Toole, president of Gentle Giant Moving Company, also serves actively on GGRC's Board of Directors, and employees from the company participate in the rowing club's adult programs and fundraising events.
"This is the first time Gentle Giant has been recognized at such an esteemed level for our charitable involvements," said O'Toole. "I could not be happier that we can share this honor with the Gentle Giant Rowing Club."
Gentle Giant Moving Company states that its charitable mission is to support youth development through athletics and education. This mission is tightly connected to the company's business purpose of creating career opportunities for motivated and capable employees. The company believes its employees are a population of athletes unto themselves as a result of the physically demanding work they carry out every day, year-round. Gentle Giant has many former college athletes and recreational rowers within the organization and has employed more than 400 rowers in its 28 year history.
"Our goal was to form a rowing club as an opportunity for underserved youth to develop teamwork, sportsmanship commitment," said Al Gehant, cofounder of Gentle Giant Rowing Club. "Gentle Giant Moving Company shares the same vision, and we're very fortunate to have them as a partner." Gehant and his cofounder Gracio Garcia, both Northeastern University Crew Team alums like O'Toole, continue to oversee all operations for GGRC.
GGRC's youth programs have attracted about 100 teens from around Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Everett, Malden, Medford, and Somerville, and other cities and towns. More than 100 adult members have also joined, including employees of the moving company.
Through Gentle Giant Charitable Foundation donations, volunteer commitments, and workplace opportunities, Gentle Giant Moving Company supports other charities that have been recognized by the Partnership Award program, including Everybody Wins! Metro Boston, Boston Healthcare for the Homeless, and YearUp.
