Positively Mouth-watering: Boys and Girls Club of Greater Newark Will Open Delaware's First Positive Place Café with Help from Rohm and Haas
NEWARK, DE (PRWeb) February 8, 2007 -- Young people at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Newark will soon learn what it takes to successfully run a small restaurant when Delaware's first Positive Place Café opens at the club later this month.
Funded through a $30,000 Community Partnership Initiative Grant from Rohm and Haas Electronic Materials in Newark, the café will enable young people to learn finance and management skills while raising funds for their Boys and Girls Club teams and clubs.
A public grand-opening for the Positive Place Café will be held at 4 p.m. on February 14 at the Boys of Girls Club of Greater Newark, 1 Positive Place, Newark, DE 19702. Boys and Girls Club "café managers" will serve food from the café for the first time during the event.
"The Positive Place Café will teach our young people responsibility, financial literacy, the value of honesty and hard work, and other life skills needed to succeed," said Stuart Sherman, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Newark. "At the same time, it will also give them a fun and interesting way to raise money for their teams and clubs."
"We are very excited and proud to support the Positive Place Café," said Richard Williams, public affairs manager for Rohm and Haas. "Through our annual Community Partnership Initiative grants, we are dedicated to supporting educational opportunities and youth development programs in Newark. Our Community Advisory Committee, which is made up of volunteers from the greater Newark area, makes the grant decisions and ensures we continue targeting the area of greatest need through periodic needs assessment surveys of local community leaders."
Young people from the Club who want to operate the café must attend Money Matters, a financial literacy program developed by Boys and Girls Club of America and Charles Schwab and taught by University of Delaware School of Business students. The program will help prepare the youth Positive Place Café operators for their many responsibilities, from preparing and selling food to arranging work shifts and ordering supplies. The youth managers will use money raised through café sales to offset travel, uniform expenses, and other costs for their Greater Newark Boys and Girls Club sports teams and clubs.
The café will offer an extensive array of foods, including healthy alternatives, as snack or dinner options to the more than 450 members of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Newark who visit the club each day.
"The signs are up, the equipment is in and our young people can't wait to turn on the "Open" sign and get going," Sherman said.
About the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Newark
The Greater Newark (Route 40) Boys & Girls Club mission is to inspire and enable young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. The club provides after-school and weekend programs to over 3,000 local youths. The 33,000 square foot facility includes swimming pool, games room, large gymnasium, art room, computer center, and library. The Club also includes athletic fields and a stand-alone Teen Center.
